A year after Sally Ride went to space, the Russians had to one-up the Americans yet again. In 1984, Svetlana Savitskaya was part of welding experiments on the outer hull of the space station, leading Savitskaya to become the first Soviet woman to space walk. She and her partner were also the first two welding up there.
