Which type of wood is typically used for framing a home?

Virtually all homes are framed with lumber from softwood trees. Why? Cost. Softwood trees grow quicker than hardwoods, so are much cheaper to produce. Most softwood lumber is marked with a stamp specifying the type of wood - for example, "S-P-F" indicates Spruce-Pine-Fir. Prized for their rich colors and grain patterns, hardwoods are used for furniture making as well as home details such as flooring and trim.
