The Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight" is widely credited for ushering hip hop into the mainstream. They were far from the first—the DJ-scratching/MCing/ breakdancing/graffiti-drawing elements of hip hop culture were already solidly in place on the streets of New York. But it was only live and local until "Rapper's Delight." Despite clocking in at an epic 15 minutes on the original 12" release, the track got major airplay on black radio stations, so a seven-minute version for mainstream pop radio followed. . . and the rest is history.
