What does DNA fingerprinting do?

DNA fingerprinting has nothing directly to do with fingerprints; instead, it uses biological samples to find an individual's identity. Just as one's fingerprint is unique, so is their DNA, which is why it's called this. But instead of prints, forensics can use something as simple as a strand of hair to match it to another sample from the suspect's body.
