Name this epic war film set during the construction of the Burma Railway in the early 1940s?
Answer The Bridge on the River Kwai
The Bridge on the River Kwai was a hit with both audiences and critics: it was the highest-grossing film of 1957 and scored that year's best picture Oscar (as well as best director, actor, and score). The film also won best-adapted screenplay — but the writers, Carl Foreman and Michael Wilson, were not there to accept it. Both men had been blacklisted and subsequently fled to Europe in order to work. Instead, the author of the book on which the story is based — who was French and non-English speaking — received the credit and the award. Years later, Foreman and Wilson received their awards (posthumously).
