The chain of evidence (also called the chain of custody) involves the process and procedure for collecting, documenting, and protecting evidence at a crime scene. Once a chain of custody is formed, officers on the scene must keep track of the evidence using a detailed log, both during the initial gathering, in its analysis, all the way through the trial.
