Take a long look at the Washington Monument and you'll notice that about a third of the way up it changes color, and the stone looks darker. Why are there two different sections?
Answer It took so long they had to use two different quarries
The monument was started in 1848, but was stopped for 23 years, from 1854 to 1877 due to a lack of funds, a struggle for control over the Washington National Monument Society, and the Civil War. When you get 27% up the monument, you can see the marble changes color since it was sourced from a different quarry than the bottom part.
