Arranged horizontally usually on the lefthand side of the runway, the precision approach path indicator lights, known as PAPIs, help pilots approach for landing. The PAPIs will flash red or white as the plane descends, depending on whether the aircraft is on the precise glide path. If three or more lights flash red, then the aircraft is flying too low.
