DeLorean's massive success with the GTO rocketed him to the top spot at Pontiac and then on to head GM's prestigious Chevrolet division in 1969. Three years later, the maverick, not-camera-shy executive ditched GM to start the DeLorean Motor Company. But it wasn't until 1981 that the first DeLorean car rolled off the assembly line, due to a series of delays that included DeLorean's choice to move production from Puerto Rico to Ireland (despite the fact that many of Irish workers had no automotive experience).
