While it's rare that a scriptwriter might ask you to improvise (Larry David being one exception), ad-libbing is when an actor might go off-script either during a live performance or behind the scenes. If the actor is particularly good at improv, he may even come up with a gem. According to Dustin Hoffman, he ad-libbed the memorable line, "I'm walking here!"
