Why was Soviet fencer Boris Onishchenko disqualified from the 1976 Montreal Olympics?
Answer He rigged his weapon so it would register touches without him actually making contact.
Fencing works like this: When a fencers's épée touches his opponent with a force of 750 grams or later, it sets of an electric sensor and that fencer gets a point for the touch. Onishchenko rigged his weapon so he could register touches at will. His shadiness and subsequent DQ brought shame to the Soviet team, and the volleyball team allegedly tried to throw him out the window back at the Olympic Village.
