After Ruiz finished with a record-setting time and without having broken much of a sweat, race officials — as well as other runners — began to suspect Ruiz of foul play. The fact that Ruiz didn't remember her splits or intervals and that race leader Jacqueline Gareau never saw Ruiz pass her didn't help Ruiz's story. Gareau was later instated as the true winner.
