Why is Mary hospitalized in "Hi!" (Season 1, Episode 20)?

Believe it or not, the initial script had Mary in the hospital for tattoo removal! But Mary Tyler Moore nixed that and they changed it to a tonsillectomy. In addition to undergoing surgery, Mary has to endure a crabby roommate (but gets an endless supply of vanilla ice cream).
