The cat's outta the bag! The Academy banked on trust to keep the award winners hush hush, but the LA Times broke the scoop in 1940, revealing the names before the ceremony. This prompted the sealed envelope tradition...which has had its own flaws (*cough, Best Picture for La La Land, anyone?).
