Why did the producers decide to shoot a second pilot episode?

Producers didn't hear enough laughs coming from the studio audience viewing the first pilot. In fact, audiences were so turned off that the pilot was the lowest-ranked television episode in CBS history. Polling revealed the main problem: Rhoda was coming off more nasty than amusing. After a speedy rewrite, the second pilot was a (hilarious) success.
