The Wolverine had the indestructible metal adamantium fused to his entire skeleton, including his retractable claws. He was able to survive the procedure because of his powerful regenerative ability. The adamantium made Wolverine virtually unstoppable as the combination of the indestructible metal and Wolverine's healing power made it impossible to mortally wound him.
