Born as Archibald Alec Leach, Cary Grant was born into a poor family in Bristol, England. His father was an alcoholic and his mother suffered from depression. His mother taught him to sing and dance when he was only four years old, and he was sent away to a school for boys at age four-and-a-half where over the years he was referred to as scruffy, naughty and noisy. Grant later modeled his adult persona, to a large extent, after the refined actor Douglas Fairbanks, whom he admired.
