Who was the first woman to receive a pension from the U.S. government as a result of military service?
Answer Margaret Corbin
In November of 1776, Margaret Corbin accompanied her husband in the defense of Fort Washington from the British. When he was struck and killed, she continued to man and fire the cannon he had been operating. In 1779, the state of Pennsylvania awarded her a regular sum of money, making her the first woman to receive a pension due to military service.
