Who was the first female police officer and what year was she hired?
Answer Alice Wells in 1910
Believe it or not, the first female law enforcement officer was former Kansas minister Alice Stebbins Wells, who was hired in a Los Angeles police department in the year 1910. Wells was also a member of the Christian Temperance Union. She sewed her own uniform by hand – a floor-length dress and jacket. She was not allowed to carry a gun but was equipped with a police rulebook and first-aid book, as well as a key to the phone call box. She went on to become a sergeant in 1934.
