Who was President of the United States when the War of 1812 began?

James Madison was elected to the presidency in 1809 and served in the position for the entire course of the War of 1812, from beginning to end. Many of those in the U.S. government who opposed the conflict derisively referred to it as "Mr. Madison's War". Despite their complaints, fighting went on anyway, ending in a virtual stalemate.
