Everyone has an origin story. Who was Gollum before he became Gollum?

The Return of the King is when we finally discover who Gollum once was. He was a normal, everyday Hobbit named Sméagol, fishing with his friend, Déagol, when the latter happened upon the One Ring. The Ring swiftly corrupted Sméagol, who killed his friend, lost himself in the Misty Mountains, and slowly turned, over time, into Gollum.
