Who invented Portland concrete?

In 1824, Joseph Aspidin took out a patent for a compound he called Portland concrete. Named after both the Isle of Portland off the British coast and the type of stone typically used to build homes, the cement was a mixture of finely ground limestone and clay calcified through a chemical reaction.
