The 1932-1935 Chaco War was fought between Bolivia and Paraguay for control of the Chaco region, which was thought to be rich in oil. The conflict, which was between two of the continent's poorest countries at the time, was the bloodiest interstate war of the 20th century. After nearly three years of fighting, a series of peace treaties ultimately granted about two-thirds of the disputed territory to Paraguay.
