Al Pacino received his first Academy Award nomination for his portrayal of Michael Corleone in Francis Ford Coppola's adaptation of "The Godfather." This almost didn't happen, as the studio wanted a more famous actor to play the part and pushed Coppola to cast Robert Redford or Warren Beatty.
