Which UK catastrophe is depicted in season 3 of The Crown?

Answer The Aberfan disaster

One of many deadly British coal mine disasters, Aberfan was particularly horrific because the majority of its 144 victims were children. The accident occurred when a massive pile of coal waste products (which the coal company had negligently allowed to accumulate) became waterlogged due to heavy rain, causing it to slide down like an avalanche to the local village. The main building hit was Pantglas Junior School; five teachers and 109 students at the school were killed. As depicted in The Crown, the Queen was roundly criticized for her delayed response to the disaster. This is reportedly her greatest regret as sovereign.
