Japan and China were in a tug-of-war over the Korean peninsula in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Toyotomi Hideyoshi-controlled Japan invaded first in 1592, but was unsuccessful. In 1627 - and then again in 1636 - the Manchu-led Qing dynasty of China invaded Korea, resulting in Korea becoming a tributary state of the Qing dynasty.
