Bill Murray was carrying on an old Christmas tradition ("Chestnuts roasting on an open fire. . .") by selling roasted chestnuts on the streets of Chicago. Once upon a time, America's eastern seaboard was covered in chestnut trees (more than 4 billion of them!) Unfortunately, nearly every one of them was dead by the mid-40s due to a mysterious blight.
