Which Mesoamerican civilization built this magnificent temple?

The Pyramid of the Moon was located in the ancient city of Teotihuacan, 40 miles northeast of Mexico City. At its height from around 1 AD to 500 AD, Teotihuacan had an estimated population of 125,000 or more - making it the largest city in the pre-Columbian Americas and the sixth largest in the world at that time. Despite its prominence, very little is known about the city's inhabitants. Their ethnicity is the subject of continuing debate.
