The War of 1812 saw some strategic British wins. Which city was captured by the British and held for over a year?
Answer Detroit
The 800-person frontier town of Detroit was captured by the British at the start of the war. Although the state's territorial governor, General William Hull, had set up a fortress guarded by 2,000 militiamen and soldiers, he surrendered Fort Detroit early on, thinking he was outnumbered. He wasn't. After the Americans retook the fort more than a year later, Hull was court-martialed and sentenced to death after being found guilty of cowardice, amongst other cowardly offenses, but was later pardoned by President Madison.
