Which big-voiced but pint-sized superstar of the golden Hollywood era was born Frances Ethel Gumm on June 10, 1922, in Grand Rapids, Minnesota?
Answer Judy Garland
Just shy of 5 feet tall, Judy Garland was considered plain compared to Elizabeth Taylor, Ava Gardner and the other glamorous leading ladies of the era. At the start of her career, the studio forced her to wear nose prosthetics and caps on her teeth. As a teenager, MGM head Louis B. Mayer referred to her as “my little hunchback." Despite a massively successful career spanning decades in both film and music, Garland suffered from poor self-esteem her entire life. Charles Walters, who directed Garland in several films, said, “Judy was the big money-maker at the time, a big success, but she was the ugly duckling … I think it had a very damaging effect on her emotionally for a long time. I think it lasted forever, really.”
