Interestingly, Monopoly's iconic tokens were not initially part of the game. Charles Darrow's original 1935 version contained no tokens at all — just a suggestion to use buttons or other household objects. A few years later, his niece's charm bracelet trinkets gave him the idea to include tokens. Three of the first tokens are still being used (the battleship, top hat, and racecar), while the rest have been retired over time (anyone remember the rocking horse?)
