Which 1980s drug epidemic do some believe involved the CIA?

This rumor broke out in a 1996 story by Gary Webb that was published in the San Jose Mercury News. Webb claimed that the CIA was responsible for selling cocaine to gangs in L.A .and funneling the profits to contras in Nicaragua. This rumor isn't necessarily substantiated, but the CIA did admit to knowing about the drug running.
