Where did these crispy, salty favorites originate from?

Fried potatoes of all kinds gained popularity in the United States during the 19th century. Moon's Lake Diner in New York created potato chips in 1853, when its chef became angry at a diner's request for crispier fried potatoes and over-cooked some thinly sliced potatoes. The customer loved this concoction so much that potato chips soon became a hit across the country.
