Where did the carol "Silent Night" originate?

Answer Austria

In 1818, churchgoers at the St. Nicolas church in Oberndorf, an Austrian city near Salzburg, heard the carol "Silent Night" ("Stille Nacht" in German) for the first time. Two years earlier, the lyrics originated in a poem written by Joseph Mohr. Franz Gruber put it to music, and a classic was born.
