When was the skateboard invented?

The origin of the skateboard is a little murky, as it appears multiple people came up with the same idea around the same time. But Southern California in the 1950s is when they first took off - initially among surfers, who needed a way to keep riding when the waves were flat (they called it "sidewalk surfing"). Soon it wasn't just surfers out riding: by 1963, over 50 million skateboards had been sold!
