When was the fall of the Berlin Wall?

As the Cold War was beginning to thaw in the 1980s, the East Berlin spokesman for the Communist Party made a surprise announcement one evening: the border between East and West would permanently open, effective immediately. Soon, crowds of East Germans were gathering at the six checkpoints along the Berlin Wall; at midnight the guards stepped aside to let them cross. That weekend, an estimated 2 million East Berliners joined their fellow citizens for a massive celebration of their restored freedom.
