When no one is home, how much should you raise or lower your thermostat to save energy?

It is best to set the temperature either 8 degrees lower than what you normally heat it to, or 8 degrees higher than what you normally cool it to when you leave the house. It can strain the system to turn it off completely, which can use more energy.
