When did the tradition of dressing up in Halloween costumes begin in America?

You didn't see a whole lot of Transformers back then — or even store-bought costumes for that matter. In the beginning, homemade was the norm and ghosts and witches were ubiquitous. Sounds dull, except for they made some pretty creepy costumes back in the day.
