While most of us are aware of the mid-20th century steps taken to reach space, the Soviet space program's origins actually date all the way back to the late-1800s. It was then that scientist, Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, began calculating how to reach outer space by rocket, even designing spacesuits and multi-stage launchers. This launched a movement in Russia.
