Lobotomy pioneer Walter Freeman performed thousands of surgeries on mental health patients using these glorified ice picks. He boasted that he could perform the procedure in 10 minutes — and didn't need to use anesthesia! His liberal experimentation included one technique that involved driving a pick into a patient's brain through the base of the eye socket and then wiggling it around blindly to cut up the brain matter. Some patients were turned into permanent vegetables. The medical procedure was discontinued in 1966, for obvious reasons.
