Invented in 1840, the "Chirogymnast" was just one of many finger stretching devices popular in that century. Periodicals were full of phony endorsements for the torturous — and often injurious — devices, but at least one of the great composers couldn't be bought: Chopin didn't hide his disgust instructed his students to "make use of their own intelligence in practicing".
