What was the primary cause of death during the War of 1812?

As with many conflicts of old, disease was the biggest killer during the War of 1812. The medical profession was still learning about sanitation and cleanliness, and advances like anesthesia were still decades away. Often minor injuries which would be no cause for fear today led to death and infection from disease.
