On March 31, 1975, the final episode of Gunsmoke aired on CBS. However, at the time no one knew it would be the final episode. The cast and crew of the series didn't find out that they'd been canceled until after the season finished filming, so Gunsmoke was never able to have a satisfactory conclusion to the story of Dodge City and Matt Dillon.
