On December 20th, 1860, South Carolina led the way in seceding from the Union. Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, and Tennessee all followed shortly and in that order. The order followed almost exactly the percentage of slaves each state had.
