What was the first "right to die" case heard by the Supreme Court?
Answer Cruzan v. Director of the Missouri Department of Health
In 1983, after she was thrown from her car in an accident, Nancy Cruzan was declared in a persistent vegetative state. In 1988, her parents asked the doctors to remove her feeding tube, but the hospital refused without a court order. The Court ruled in favor of the Department of Health, finding it was acceptable to require "clear and convincing evidence" of a patient's wishes for removal from life support. A significant outcome of the case was the creation of advance health directives.
