What name did the Aztecs give to the commoners, or the working class?

Answer Macehualtin

In the Aztec civilization, the macehualtin were the lowest social class. They mostly consisted of rural farmers who farmed lands that belonged to the chinampas. The rural macehualtin created small dams and terraces on these sites to boost their agricultural productivity. On these lands, crops typical of Mexican agriculture were cultivated including maize, beans, and squash. These initiatives were coordinated by local communities and not by the government.
