Volkswagen was founded in 1937 by the German Labour Front as a nationalized automotive industry. After World War II, the Allies focused on helping rebuild the company to resuscitate the German auto industry. In 1959, the company dubbed one of its cars the "Beetle" to help the U.S. market avoid connecting the Volkswagen name to its historical Nazi ties.
