When the French invaded Mexico in 1861, Benito Juárez had been president for three years, having declared himself Mexico's President after the Reform War. However, the French removed him from office, replacing him with a European nobleman as "Emperor of Mexico" in 1864. Instead of letting this slide, Juárez and his army drove the French out, and he proceeded to rule until his death.
