What is the National Historic Landmark District of Coloma, California famous for?

The census-designated place of Coloma is the location of Sutter's Mill, where carpenter James W. Marshall first discovered gold in 1848. This led to the California Gold Rush, which brought some 300,000 people into the state. In 1961, Coloma was declared a National Historic Landmark.
