What is the name of the type of device that was able to play VHS tapes that were first sold commercially in the 1970s?
Answer VCR
Before VHS VCRs became the standard, the company the manufactured your VCR would determine the format tape you needed to use. Sony VCRs would play tapes in the Betamax format, whereas the company JVC's players played VHS tapes. Eventually the VHS format won out and most VCRs played VHS tapes, but as of 2019, both formats are going away.
